About Alajo Yankee

A platform born from cultural roots, built for a thriving community future.

Empowering the African Diaspora Through Collective Prosperity

Our mission is to preserve and modernize the African tradition of communal savings, known as Ajo, Esusu, Tontine, or Chit Fund, making it accessible, transparent, and powerful for communities across the United States.

We believe that financial strength is built together. When communities pool their resources with trust and accountability, they unlock opportunities that no individual could achieve alone.

Alajo Yankee is named for the "Alajo" savings concept paired with "Yankee"; a nod to the diaspora living in America, honoring their heritage while building new wealth.

🌿

How Alajo Yankee Came to Be

From an idea to continue the time trusted African community saving practice to a platform serving thousands.

2018

The Spark

Alajo Yankee's predecessor dates back to the early 2000 when a group of 8 Nigerian-American friends from across the U.S decided to replicate the Ajo practice. They used spreadsheets, email, text messages, and prayer. It worked, but barely.

2020

Going Digital

During the pandemic, demand for digital community savings explodes. Alajo Yankee builds its first web platform to serve groups whereever they are located in the U.S.

2022

Community Expansion

Alajo Yankee expands to serve Ghanaian, Cameroonian, Senegalese, and Caribbean diaspora communities. Over $1M pooled through the platform.

2024

The Rebuild

Full platform modernization with enterprise-grade security, JWT authentication, SQL Server backend, and a beautiful new interface for our growing family of 1,200+ members.
